Hi, I’m Megan.
I’m a writer with 10+ years of experience in journalism and corporate communications.
I work with businesses and nonprofits to write annual reports, blog posts, newsletters, social media content, training programs, and more. I’ve written for both internal and external audiences.
My communications are action-oriented, concise, and designed with an audience in mind.
My Writing Style
Narrative
People like to read about other people. We want to follow along as someone works through a challenge. We want to understand each other’s reasoning and experiences.
Whether I’m writing a traditional feature story, an employee profile, or a letter to potential donors, I rely on narrative storytelling to engage readers.
I honed this skill as a journalist. Here, here, and here are some cover stories for the Albany Business Review that I’m proud of.
Informative
Good writing is invisible. When something’s easy to read, we’re not thinking about the writing, we’re thinking about the message. I specialize in breaking down complex topics — legislation, operating procedures, etc. — for the layperson.
Voice-y
In a world corporate cliches, writing that reads human is refreshing. I love to write with a point of view and something to say. I’ve also been known to make people on the internet LOL with my humor writing and have been published in outlets like McSweeney’s Internet Tendency and The Belladonna Comedy.

Add voice and emotion to company-wide announcements to inspire internal and external audiences.

As a former HR Generalist, I have a wealth of HR info and a deep belief in the value of HR. I can help your People team deliver information to employees by:

Creating the communications that capture your company’s culture: New hire emails, onboarding presentations, benefits guides, and culture docs.
Collaborating with learning and development teams to ensure training materials are polished and professional.
-
Change is difficult and takes a great deal of communication to navigate. A clear communication strategy includes providing information (again and again and again) and reassurance at each step of the change. I’ve worked on change management communications that:
Respond quickly to on-the-ground feedback and needs of team members.
Lay out information concisely.
Bolster a project’s overarching messaging without feeling too jargon-y.
-
Too often, knowledge centers are set-it-and-forget-it endeavors. I’m passionate about building dynamic intranets. I’ve done that by:
Partnering with service centers (finance, IT, and Ops,) to maintain information and resources so the intranet remains trusted.
Developing content calendars and overall strategy to drive engagement.
Building tools based on team member feedback that elevate the intranet beyond an information repository
About Me
(the longer version)
I started my career in journalism and cut my teeth as a reporter at The Daily Collegian, Penn State’s independent student newspaper. There, I covered local government, state government and higher education. My byline appeared in publications like Inside Higher Ed, The Delaware News-Journal, and various Pennsylvania newspapers. It was a thrill to see my name in print each time.
After graduation, I worked as a reporter at the Albany Business Review, where I fell in love with upstate New York and the Adirondacks. I reported on higher education and the creative economy at Albany Business Review and became comfortable with meeting deadlines and juggling multiple stories.
When I left journalism, I took a quick detour into HR. I expected to use my interviewing skills as a recruiter, but instead learned quite a bit about benefits, payroll, employee relations, and people management as an HR Generalist.
Eventually, I blended my experiences in journalism and HR and specialized in internal communications. I worked with companies like Uber and 42 North Dental to deliver impactful messaging to teams spanning locations, generations, and perspectives.
Now, I work as a freelance/contract writer. I’m most excited about working with teams that have something to say — whether that’s an ask for donations or an announcement to employees.
My experience in journalism gave me the skills to learn about any topic and digest my findings for a general audience and my time in the corporate world taught me how to write in the voice of executives and leaders without relying on dreaded business cliches.
Would it surprise you to learn that creative writing is also a passion of mine? I’m a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators as well as the 12x12 Picture Book Challenge community. My humor writing for adults has been published in places like McSweeney’s and Belladonna Comedy.
Outside of work, I like to read and take my tiny dog, Moose, for long walks.
